LANGUEDOC-ROUSSILLON

Languedoc-Roussillon – the region of the Languedoc-Roussillon is made up of five Departments, Aude, Gard, Herault, Lozére and the Pyrenees-Orientales. The main towns and cities in the region are Ales, Beziers, Carcassonne, Montpellier, Narbonne, Nimes, Perpignan and Sete.

The region has a total surface area of 27 376kms and borders the principality of Andorra, Auvergne, Midi-Pyrenees, Provence Alpes Cote D’Azur, the Rhone Alpes, and Spain and extends to the Mediterranean sea. Historically the provinces extended into some of these neighbouring regions and there is still to this day a little controversy over where borders are believed should be.

The vineyards of the Languedoc-Roussillon region dominate the agricultural terrain with 740,300 acres under plantation with vines. This surface area is vastly superior to the combined surface area of the vineyards in the Bordeax area. The vines are well suited to the climate of the Mediterranean and the soils and there is a large production of wine with new world influence in this region. The large production of wine has largely been overlooked very often due to the fact that very little was classified as appellation controlee until the 80’s.
