RHONE ALPES
The region of the Rhone Alpes - Springing from a glacier, the Rhône River flows south through France towards the sunshine of the Mediterranean. Its broad valley embraces thriving cities, Roman ruins, medieval castles, fabled vineyards and the snowy peaks of the French Alps.
The region of the Rhone Alpes has eight departments, Ain, Ardeche, Drome, Isere, Loire, Rhone, Savoie and the Haute Savoie.
It is a vast and varied region stretching from the high mountain regions to the east which borders Switzerland and Italy, the river Rhone valley in the centre and the Ardeche hills to the west. Many well known and fashionable ski resorts in the world are in this region and Mont Blanc which is Europe's highest peak dominates.
The regional capital town is Lyon which is a world heritage site and is quite beautiful. The other main cities include Annecy, Chambery, Grenoble, St Etienne, Bourg en Bresse, Valence and Privas.
With its abundance of rivers and river gorges, lakes and natural parks the Rhone Alpes is a diverse region offering both a summer and a winter destination.
Gastronomically this regions has loads to offer. Great food, famous restaurants and of course the vineyards producing the Beaujolais, Côte du Rhone and the the Savoie wines.
The main airport for this region is Lyon Saint-Exupery but there are several smaller airports in the smaller towns offering a selection international flights as well.
